IN MY VIEW, IT MEANS "NO CONTESTS" PERIOD. WHERE HAVE ALL THE
EXCITING CONTESTS GONE? IT APPEARS THAT THE RADIO CORPORATIONS
OF TODAY HAVE ABANDONED THEM..JUST AS THEY HAVE THE DISC JOCKEY
OR AIR TALENT. BACK IN MY ERA OF THE 50'S, 60'S AND ; 70'S, THE AIR WAVES
WERE ALIVE WITH EXCITEMENT OF BIG GIVEAWAYS AND LISTENER INVOLVED
CONTESTS. STATIONS I WORKED OR PROGRAMMED NOT ONLY HAD ONE MAIN
CONTEST, BUT EACH D.J. HAD HIS/HER OWN INDIVIDUAL SMALLER CONTESTS,
AND WE WERE PROMOTING ANOTHER BIG CONTEST COMING NEXT! THIS
WAS THE TIME HONORED WAY TO ATTRACT LISTENERS AND KEEP THEM FROM
TUNING TO YOUR COMPETITION. IT ALSO WAS AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO IMPROVE
SALES AND ATTRACT ADVERTISERS AS WELL. SMALL WONDER THAT THE
RADIO STATIONS OF TODAY ARE ATTRACTING FEWER LISTENERS EACH YEAR.
NO WONDER THAT REVENUES ARE DOWN MAKING BANKRUPTCY OR A
"RESTRUCTURING" INEVITABLE. RADIO CONTEST HISTORY IS AWASH WITH
TREASURE HUNTS OF VARYING DEGREES OF CASH & PRIZES, SEVEN CAR
GIVEAWAYS, THE MILLIONAIRE, AND OF COURSE JACK McCOYS' PRODUCTION
MARVEL THE LAST CONTEST. WHAT SIZZLE. WHAT PAZAZZ!! TODAY, RADIO
CAN'T SEEM TO BE CLEVER ENOUGH TO GET BEYOND CONCERT TICKET
GIVEAWAYS TO CALLER NUMBER 8, ETC. SOON, THE RADIO LISTENER WILL
BE SUBJECTED TO "ALL VOICE TRACK ALL THE TIME". YES, JUDGEMENT
DAY IS COMING FOR THE BROADCAST INDUSTRY. THIS LACK OF CARING AND
/OR CREATIVE COMMITMENT TO IT'S AUDIENCE WILL MOST CERTAINLY LEAD
TO DEAD AIR ACROSS THE DIAL...THE ULTIMATE PUNISHMENT FOR THOSE
WHO DO NOT ADMIT GUILT, BUT INSTEAD, PLEAD NOLO CONTENDERE.
THAT'S MY RADIOPINION...WHAT'S YOURS?
(in a criminal case) a defendant's pleading that does not admit guilt but subjects him or her to punishment as though a guilty plea had been entered, the determination of guilt remaining open in other proceedings.
MANY PEOPLE CALL THIS A"NO CONTEST" PLEA. AS IT APPLIES TO RADIO,
